On February 1, 2021, Yonhap News published an article stating that the leader of South Korea's largest opposition party is considering building an undersea tunnel to connect with Kyushu.

Kim Jong-in, head of South Korea's largest opposition party, People's Power, and chairman of the emergency response committee, announced at a meeting of the committee on the 1st that he would actively support construction of a new airport on Gadeok Island off the coast of Busan in the southeast. He also announced that he would consider constructing an undersea tunnel to connect Katoku Island and Kyushu.
