Tsushima's central inclined shaft ``Sumo Base'' appears - October issue of Genji News

■“Sumo Base” located in Tsushima’s “Central Diagonal” appears for the first time

In the center of Tsushima, there is a famous mountain called Shiratake. The 519m summit is a huge rock in the shape of the letter "M", and Mt. Odake and Mt. Medake make up two great mountains. The ridgeline is made up of huge rocks that extend from north to south, and it has become a symbol and landmark of Tsushima due to its mystery and beauty. The ground is covered with primeval forest, which collects rain to form the Sumo River, which flows into Aso Bay. Once you climb the heart-breaking last 400m, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of not only all of Tsushima but also the Korean Peninsula from the top.

In this mountain forest overlooking Hakudake is the Sumo base of the international highway and Japan-Korea tunnel. This is the entrance for excavating two inclined shafts as Tsushima's ``Central Incline'' that connects to the ``Koura Incline'' on the east coast and the ``Aren Incline'' on the west coast, and will be used as Tsushima's ``underground station terminal'' in the future. There are also plans to make it the gateway to Japan. Nowadays, it is a mountain forest where cypress is grown and shipped. The planted cypress trees are now 40 years old and are ready to be shipped, but because the trees are thin, they will have to wait another 15 years. It was decided to thin the trees, carry out maintenance, and build a work/export road, and the work was completed in September. This time, for the first time, I would like to introduce "Sumo Base".

So far, we have introduced the ``Tsushima Office'' in Koura on the east, which connects to the tunnel coming from Iki, and the ``slanted shaft entrance'' in Aren on the west, which leads to South Korea. With this "Sumo Base", the three points will be "visible" and connected.
