Thirty children of North Korean defectors visit the Japan-Korea tunnel site - Site News, August Edition

Thirty children of so-called "defectors" who escaped North Korea and are living in South Korea visit the Japan-Korea tunnel site

On July 26, 30 children of North Korean defectors—those born in North Korea but who risked their lives to flee their country and flee to South Korea to escape political oppression—visited the Nagoya Inclined Shaft site of the Japan-Korea Tunnel in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. They received scholarships from the Hyojeong World Peace Foundation, established by Hak Ja Han, wife of the late Reverend Sun Myung Moon, the proponent of the Japan-Korea Tunnel. Their first visit to Japan was also made possible through the organization's efforts. It was also the first time for the children of North Korean defectors to be welcomed at the Karatsu Inclined Shaft site. They were surprised to learn that Japan is not only planning a highway across the 38th parallel from North to South Korea, but also that construction has already begun on an undersea tunnel connecting the peninsula to Japan.

Dr. Hak Ja Han said, "Unification of North and South Korea will definitely be realized. When that happens, these students will be the driving force behind its realization. It is the young people who will firmly unite North and South Korea," expressing her high hopes for the young people who have survived difficult circumstances. Furthermore, a source who accompanied the group said that although they have come from a food-poor North Korea to a food-rich South Korea, they worry about overeating, but that many of them have purer hearts than South Korean youth who have become accustomed to affluence. The group is scheduled to spend three days and two nights to enjoy sightseeing at Huis Ten Bosch and Kyushu.
