The current situation in Asia is becoming increasingly severe due to issues such as North Korea's missile program. In order to change this situation, the Road of Peace, the International Highway, and the Japan-Korea Tunnel are essential. The Japan-Korea Tunnel will undoubtedly become the foundation for building prosperity and peace between Japan and Korea, and in Northeast Asia as a whole.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Seikan Tunnel. I believe now is the time to apply the excavation technology used in the Seikan Tunnel to the Japan-Korea Tunnel.
In addition to further improving the inclined tunnel sites in Karatsu, Iki, and Tsushima, the Japan-Korea Tunnel Promotion National Conference was formed last year, and the Foundation intends to build on this foundation by further expanding the national movement to promote the construction of the Japan-Korea Tunnel nationwide, and to work hard to ensure that the International Highway/Japan-Korea Tunnel Project becomes a national project for both Japan and Korea by 2020.
