The environment surrounding Asia is becoming increasingly severe, with issues such as the North Korean missile issue. In order to change this situation, roads of peace, international highways, and Japan-Korea tunnels are essential. The Japan-Korea Tunnel will no doubt become the foundation for building prosperity and peace in Japan and Korea, as well as in Northeast Asia.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Seikan Tunnel. I think now is the time to connect the Seikan tunnel's excavation technology to the Japan-Korea tunnel.
In addition to further improving the inclined shaft sites in Karatsu, Iki, and Tsushima, the Foundation will further support the nationwide movement to promote the construction of Japan-Korea tunnels based on the establishment of the Japan-Korea Tunnel National Council last year. We will continue to work hard to ensure that the International Highway and Japan-Korea Tunnel Project becomes a national project for both Japan and South Korea by 2020.
