Surveying of the Iki Ashibe Inclined Shaft - Site News, September Issue

■ Head north-northeast! Surveying is underway for the Iki Ashibe Inclined Shaft entrance

Surveying for the installation of the shaft entrance was carried out on August 14th and 15th at the planned site of the Ashibe Inclined Shaft in Iki. Using the prefectural road that runs east-west beside the site as a base, data was collected at various points on site using surveying equipment such as transits. Data was also collected from the sea side and the pier, and tentative decisions were made on the location of the shaft entrance and the direction and route of the work shaft that would proceed from there. In the heat of summer, which was hotter than usual, the engineers collected data while being cheered on by a chorus of cicadas.

The main tunnel of the Japan-Korea Tunnel runs north along the east coast of the island, then curves west at its northern tip before heading towards Tsushima, but the survey data will be important in determining where the service tunnel will intersect with the main tunnel. This service tunnel will reach the deepest point of the project, 331 meters below the seabed, and will collect water that springs up between Iki and Tsushima.

The location of the tunnel entrance was tentatively decided, and it was determined to be 1,400 meters to the north-northeast. After a review meeting was held with the relevant parties, the sounds of hammering construction could finally be heard on Iki.
