[Busan Yonhap News] Kim Jong-in, head of South Korea's largest opposition party, People's Power, and chairman of the emergency response committee, announced on the 1st that at a meeting of the committee, a new airport construction project on Gadeok Island, off the coast of Busan in the southeast, was proposed. He said he would actively support the move, and also announced that he would consider building an undersea tunnel to connect Katoku Island and Kyushu.

``Construction of Gadeokdo New Airport will bring huge employment and economic benefits,'' Kim said, emphasizing that ``we will develop it into a smart airport with global competitiveness.'' He expressed the idea of providing legal and institutional support to create an environment in which domestic technology and private capital can be invested.

The Korea-Japan undersea tunnel project is expected to have a much smaller financial burden than Japan, with significant economic effects such as 54.5 trillion won (approximately 5.1 trillion yen) in added production and 450,000 jobs. He explained that this is a project that will be carried out.
